Sorry I have been MIA this week. This post may contain TMI for some of you so I apologize ahead of time!!
Baker had diarrhea starting on Saturday and had it off and on the rest of the weekend into Monday. On Tuesday, we noticed a stark worsening of his condition that morning so Gordie kept him home and stayed with him. When I got home from work, I noticed he had a rash all over his body, little red dots. Now, on Monday I saw a small rash on his tummy. I thought it had been from a t shirt I had him in that has an appliqué on it and that it might have rubbed against his stomach and created some irritation. We put him in a onesie, fed him, and put him to bed. So when I saw this all over neck to foot starting to show up on his face rash, I panicked. It almost looked measle like so I called the Dr. and we got an appt that same evening (Tuesday). I took him to the appointment myself because Gordie was still trying to feel better. Sunday night he wasn't feeling the greatest either. So needless to say my two boys were ill. On the way to the Dr. office since we left a little early, I stopped at Walgreens and picked up some ill necessities: ginger ale, sprite, chicken noodle soup, pedialyte, diapers, etc. I am SURE the cashier LOVED ringing up our order. I always wonder what they think or what goes through their minds when they see certain things that people buy. Like oh god let me go sanitize my hands, PRONTO! haha.
We got to his dr. office and waited, waited, and waited. His dr. was running behind seemingly her trend lately. His appt was at 750PM and we waited in the waiting room until 810PM. Baker entertained himself by blowing raspberries and playing with his toy elmo. He seems to be quite the ham. He really isn't shy one bit. Any other baby or child that walks, crawls, or is strolled by him, he has to see them. There was a little girl that was in her mother's arms and sat on her lap about a few chairs down from us. Well, there was a divider in the wall between the chairs so he couldn't see her. Baker who was sitting on my lap proceeded to lean forward and peek around the corner of the divider so that he could see the little girl. HA! It was hilarious. We always knew he was observant but wow! :)
We finally got called back and then the waiting game continued. He weighed in at 19 lbs so luckily he hadn't lost any weight. I still think he has lost weight over the course of this week because by Tuesday he hadn't had the diarrhea as long as he has by now and is fitting back in his 2-3 size diapers which before he was only in his size 3. So I'm thinking he's lost weight. He isn't showing signs of dehydration though so I think we're doing something right at least, I hope. Back to the story, so we sit in the room and wait for the dr. She finally comes in around 830PM and looks at him. She suspects he has the Adenovirus again and that this rash is a part of the virus. Baker had the Adenovirus previously (back in April) but his symptoms are nothing like what he had back then so I don't know what to believe. Before he didn't throw up or have diarrhea. It was more or less throat irritation, high fever, and loss of appetite because of the mucous in the back of his throat collecting and thickening with his formula. He didn't have a rash nor did he have this harsh of symptoms so he really is taking a hard hit this go around or whatever he has seeming this to me but this is just my diagnosis is more like a stomach bug, again. She did a strep test as his throat was really red but it came back negative and the test that came back from getting cultured came back negative which is also great news. So with a virus, we leave the dr. office just as fast as we got there to boot - empty handed. So over the course of the next few days, we have been treating his diarrhea symptoms to try and keep them at bay although we have been unsuccessful. Tons of pedialyte, no milk, BRAT diet, oatmeal, etc. We tried just yesterday to introduce him to his Enfamil Prosobee formula (soy based) since last time that is what we did with him and his awful diarrhea issue since he is lacking lactose in his belly to breakdown regular Enfamil. Gordie said he was starving and it went down fine but it didn't stay down. Within a matter of 10-15 minutes it was thrown up, all over. So we reverted back to clear liquids, aka Pedialyte. We tried the Prosobee formula again last night due to us thinking maybe it was just a one time thing with him throwing up because he really seemed "hungry". Well, it stayed down and he seemed happy and fine but then he coughed and it all came back up. All over him, the swing he was sitting in, and the clothes he was wearing. Back in the bathtub he went. (this was bath #2 of the day). Today, we got up and decided maybe just maybe he would try the formula once again since that is what the dr. said is to push the pedialyte and then push the formula so I figured we'd push the formula once again. Well he seemed fine when I got him out of his crib but he was all wet not to mention dirty so I figured I'd change him. I got him all cleaned up and was feeding him his 4 oz of formula and he seemed fine and then while eating I hear *squirt* yes that meant I had a nasty diaper to change in my future. He got done eating and seemed fine and then all of a sudden the formula was spewed everywhere. I got him cleaned up, changed his nasty yet again diarrhea diaper and had enough and called the doctor. while I was on the phone with the dr. he had yet ANOTHER diarrhea diaper and I told her that yesterday he had about 10 and the day before that was about the same. He is going too frequently but in their opinion, if there isn't blood in it then he'll be okay. She did suggest buying Acidophilus which is basically a probiotic that I could get in the vitamin aisle to put in his bottle or food three times a day to help "thicken" his stool. I have yet to make it to the store today so I will do that shortly now that Gordie is home for the day and I don't have to make Baker go with me. I hate making him get in his car seat and go places when he is so sick. Today he has eaten carrots and rice along with bananas and we haven't had any diarrhea yet *cross our fingers* that the carrots did the trick. I wish I had read that blog post earlier that carrots help diarrhea!! He has been such a sleepy baby since he has been sick but I'm hoping he is just sleeping to deal with the sickness and "sleep" it off. I just want our happy go lucky baby back!! Although I will say, he has been pretty smiley and happy throughout the whole sickness just like the other times in the past. But I just want us to get back to "normal!"
On a happy note, I feel good and it's the weekend!! YAY. Luckily through all this, I have been able to work at home in the mornings and head to the office in the afternoon to be able to take care of Baker in the morning and trade off with Gordie in the afternoon since he has been getting off early. I am so thankful for that. Oh yeah, happy friday the 13th too!
